Rules & Regulations: A Look at Landlords’ Sneaky Ability to Control Their Tenants

Date and Time: Wednesday October 26, 2022, 3:30-4:15 p.m.

Speaker: Steven Thompson

Ignore the landlord’s rules and regulations at your own peril, because inside that often-overlooked exhibit may be the landlord’s secret to getting its way. Every tenant should carefully consider the rules and regulations because they may require a tenant to radically change the way it intends to do business. Speakers will discuss tips to avoid unanticipated consequences for your client.

Respect and Dignity in the Workplace

Date and Time: Thursday October 27, 2022, 9:30-10:45 a.m.

Speaker: Ashley Kelly

This presentation will discuss the best practices for employers to prevent and address harassment in the workplace, whether based on sex, race, or another protected class, especially given today’s new remote paradigm. Using real-world examples, the workshop will offer practical insights to help companies avoid not only the significant legal consequences that can accompany unlawful harassment, but also the damage to employee morale and retention that can be even more difficult to overcome in the time of the Great Resignation.

From Flailing to Flourishing: Shopping Center Redevelopment 2022

Speaker: Scott Fisher

This interactive workshop will focus on trends in shopping center redevelopment and the legal hurdles faced in enabling an existing shopping center to achieve its highest and best use. We will examine the revitalization and redevelopment of a one-million-square-foot shopping center by adapting to market conditions, replacing, and repositioning current tenant mix and bringing in a highly coveted grocery anchor.

Ready to Open Your Franchise? Hang On — You Can’t Sign Your Lease Without the Franchisor Rider

Date and Time: Thursday October 27, 2022, 9:30-10:45 a.m.

Speaker: Jonathan Neville

A franchisor rider is a document typically required by a franchisor that provides it with certain rights and protections if its franchisee defaults under the lease. This presentation will discuss negotiation tactics, issues, and tensions around negotiating these documents during a lease negotiation, which can sometimes turn a two-party lease negotiation into a three-party circus.

Speaker: David Marmins

This workshop will explore disputes arising between retailers and their neighbors. This includes tenant vs. tenant disputes and disputes between landlords, tenants, and third-party property owners.
