The Modern Slavery Crisis Manufacturers Can’t Ignore
AGG Global Trade & Sanctions attorneys Allison Raley and Nikita Kulkarni co-authored an article for Industry Today discussing how manufacturers can proactively incorporate regulations and processes within their supply chains to protect their company from modern slavery risks.
With global regulators tightening forced-labor rules for manufacturers, the UK Modern Slavery Act has developed into a due‑diligence expectation with reputational, operational, and commercial consequences.
The Modern Slavery Act unified existing slavery and human trafficking laws, created new prevention and risk tools, established an Anti-Slavery Commissioner, developed new protections for victims, and gave authorities the power to confiscate profits from forced labor and trafficking for victim compensation.
Allison and Nikita recommend the reporting areas that companies should structure their statements around, and the details they should include in their reports.
Manufacturers should not ignore key supply chain indicators. “A forced‑labor risk may occur deep within any multilayered supply chain,” Allison and Nikita stated. “A manufacturer’s internal system of accountability should be ready to address it.”
Allison and Nikita also highlighted practical compliance frameworks manufacturers should follow, including mapping the supply chain beyond the first tier, training procurement quality teams, and more.
