Michael L. Van Cise is a partner in the Private Wealth Practice.

Mr. Van Cise focuses his practice on assisting individuals and families with sophisticated wealth transfer planning, federal and state wealth transfer taxation, business succession planning, charitable giving, probate and estate administration. Mr. Van Cise advises high net worth individuals and families on planning vehicles to preserve family wealth, family values, business interests, and legacy assets. Because the work of the Private Wealth Practice is focused on wealthy families, Mr. Van Cise and his colleagues have a unique depth of experience in helping high net worth individuals craft an estate plan and conduct strategic wealth transfer planning. Mr. Van Cise has experience assisting clients with grantor retained annuity trusts funded with assets including publicly traded securities, closely held businesses and holding companies. Mr. Van Cise also works with clients in business succession planning for family-owned and closely held businesses.  Mr. Van Cise is part of the closely-held and family business practice group and has assisted owners of family businesses with shareholders agreements, lifetime gifting, planning with life insurance, and management and control transition. Mr. Van Cise’s experience also includes assisting families with planning for non-resident aliens, international wealth transfer planning, and lifetime and testamentary charitable planning.

In addition to representing individuals, Michael has advised tax-exempt entities ranging from public charities to private operating foundations and private grant making foundations on issues including the private foundation excise taxes, corporate governance and various tax compliance requirements.  

Mr. Van Cise has been a frequent author in numerous national publications including Estate Planning, Trusts and Estates and Taxation of Exempts. Prior to attending law school, Mr. Van Cise worked as a development officer for Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, an independent, coeducational, college preparatory school, serving high school boarding and day students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Mr. Van Cise previously served as president of the school's Alumni Council and as the Alumni Gifts Chair for the Annual Fund. Mr. Van Cise completed the Leadership Darlington program in March 2012. Mr. Van Cise was a member of the 2017-2018 class of the Philanthropic Advisor Leadership Institute (PALI), a collaboration between the Atlanta Jewish Foundation, the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and the United Way of Greater Atlanta.
