Lessons From Recent PPP Loan and COVID Fraud Cases

AGG Government Investigations partners Aaron Danzig and Sara Lord authored an article published by Law360 on March 21, 2022, titled “Lessons From Recent PPP Loan and COVID Fraud Cases.”

In the article, Aaron and Sara discuss remarks from President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland indicating an increased effort to investigate and prosecute pandemic fraud. The attorneys provide an overview of recent cases highlighting some of the characteristics we can expect to see in future prosecutions, as well as the particular susceptibility of these cases to the use of heightened data analytics.

As the government pours additional resources into combating pandemic-related fraud, Aaron and Sara offer conclusions that can be drawn from the government’s investigations, including that “the government’s scope of investigation has expanded from the so-called low-hanging fruit to include multistate and transnational investigations of organized fraud schemes involving millions of dollars.”
