PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals Revised Significantly

On July 10, 2008, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) announced revisions to its PhRMA Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals. PhRMA, the industry’s trade association, developed the Code to give pharmaceutical companies guidance on ethically appropriate marketing of pharmaceutical products to healthcare professionals. The newly revised Code, which will become effective January 1, 2009, narrows the list of marketing benefits that companies may offer providers and imposes specific limitations on speaker and consultant programs and speaker training meetings, but also expands the Code’s emphases on sales representative education and training and on ensuring companies are moving actively toward compliance.
