As expected, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) new quality measurement scale for nursing homes (Nursing Home Compare 3.0) went live on February 20, 2015. CMS announced that the new system had a significant impact on nursing homes’ ratings, including a decline in the Overall Five Star Rating for approximately one third of nursing homes.
About two thirds of nursing homes experienced a decline in their quality measures rating, and the number of nursing homes receiving one star for their quality measures increased from 8.5 percent to 13 percent.
Before the February 20 changes, about 80 percent of nursing homes received either a 4 or 5-star rating on their quality measures. Now, only 49 percent of nursing homes have a 4 or 5-star rating on their quality measures.
