New Rules Govern Internet Pharmacies

On April 6, 2009, the Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”) released regulations to implement the Ryan Haight Act Online Pharmacy Consumer Protection Act of 2008. The Ryan Haight Act had been signed into law on October 15, 2008, and passed in response to a lack of regulation of internet pharmacies and specifically named after an 18-year-old who died after taking pharmaceuticals he purchased via the internet. The Ryan Haight Act states, “No controlled substance may be delivered, distributed, or dispensed by means of the Internet without a valid prescription.”
