HHS Secretary Releases Public Health Emergency Medical Countermeasures Review and Recommendations

Last week U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius released a report that examines the federal government’s system to produce medications, vaccines, equipment and supplies needed for a health emergency, known as medical countermeasures (MCMs) and makes recommendations for a better approach for preparedness and response. The strategy outlined in the report represents a significant departure from the U.S. government’s previous approach and recognizes that incremental improvements will not allow the nation to create the nimble, flexible capabilities needed to produce adequate MCMs.
