Georgia DCH Receives Approval for Statewide Health Information Exchange; Grant Funds Activated

On March 30, 2011, the Department of Community Health (DCH) announced that it received final approval for the statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE) from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). In 2010, DCH received a $13 million federal grant in support of the HIE, but ONC approval was needed to activate the grant monies. In total, 56 states, eligible territories and qualified State Designated Entities have received similar grants. The purpose of the ONC HIE grants is to support states’ efforts to rapidly build capacity for exchanging health information across the healthcare system, both within and across states. Specifically, awardees are responsible for increasing connectivity and enabling patient-centric information flow to improve the quality and efficiency of care.
