Congress Passes 10-month Extension to Physician Payment Cuts

On Friday, February 17, 2012, Congress voted (293–132 in the House, 60–36 in the Senate) to extend a provision of the Middle Class Tax Relief and Job Creation Act, which prevents a 27.4 percent cut in physician payments by Medicare. The cut was scheduled to begin on March 1, 2012, following a two month extension that was authorized December 23, 2011. Once signed by President Obama, the extension will allow Medicare payments to physicians to remain in place through December 31, 2012.
