ATLANTA, Sept. 21, 2003 – The State Department has named Arnall Golden Gregory LLP attorney Glenn Hendrix as a delegate to a Special Commission of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.
Hendrix, a partner in AGG’s litigation practice and chair of the American Bar Association’s International Litigation Committee, will be one of two U.S. delegates to the commission. The other is a State Department attorney responsible for private international law issues.
The Hague Conference is an inter-governmental organization whose 62 member nations draft and negotiate multilateral treaties or “conventions” concerning various fields of private international law. The United States is currently a party to four such conventions, including the Hague Convention on Taking Evidence Abroad, known as the “Evidence Convention,” and the Hague Convention on the Service Abroad of Judicial and Extrajudicial Documents in Civil or Commercial Matters, known as the “Service Convention.”
Hendrix and the other Special Commission delegates will meet at The Hague in the Netherlands between Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 to review and make recommendations concerning the practical operation of the Evidence and Service Conventions. The commission will consider, among other topics, practical difficulties encountered by users of those Conventions, the use of new information technologies in connection with the Conventions, the preparation of a new “practical handbook” for users of the Service Convention, and various other “nuts and bolts” issues related to international litigation.
The last Special Commission on the Evidence and Service Conventions convened in 1989. For more information on the Hague Conference or on the Special Commission, visit www.hcch.net.
Hendrix encourages attorneys who have experienced difficulties with the Hague Evidence or Service Conventions, or who have suggestions regarding their practical operation, to contact him so that he can attempt to include their issues on the Special Commission’s agenda.
