AGG Partner Jeffrey Y. Lewis is quoted in an article titled “Imperial Sugar Knew of Problem, Attorney Says,” published in the Savannah Morning News. Fourteen people were killed and dozens injured in an inferno on February 7, 2008, when a fire and explosion tore through the Imperial Sugar refinery in Port Wentworth, Georgia. Forty-four cases were filed in State Court as a result. Mr. Lewis represents Zurich Service Corp., the insurer for Imperial Sugar, and has requested during a pre-trial hearing that the judge rule for his client as a matter of law and remove it from several pending cases. He says that while Zurich Service Corp. conducted property risk assessments for underwriting insurance, the company never conducted safety inspections, and had no legal duty to do so.
