An Arnall Golden Gregory team, under the leadership of partner Robert Rothman, successfully argued that a death sentence imposed on Joaquin Arevalo should be voided, then negotiated a new sentencing agreement with the State of Georgia that removed Mr. Arevalo from death row and made him eligible for parole in 2028. A team of AGG attorneys and staff worked on the case for nearly 10 years. Mr. Arevalo was sentenced to death in 1999 for his role in a robbery at his former workplace that resulted in two deaths. The death sentence was vacated after AGG proved that Mr. Arevalo’s trial lawyers provided ineffective assistance by failing to develop or present evidence of mental illness to the jury.
