AGG Litigation and Healthcare attorney Drew Stevens will speak on “Language Access Rights in Health Care: Improve Equity and Avoid Complaints and Litigation” at the American Health Law Association (AHLA) Physicians and Hospitals Law Institute on February 3, 2022, from 8-9 a.m. His co-presenters include Toby K. L. Morgan, chief of nondiscrimination compliance at Emory Healthcare, and Dylan N. De Kervor, section chief for Section 1557 enforcement and compliance with the Office for Civil Rights at the Department of Health and Human Services.
The presenters will address recent litigation in which plaintiffs alleged a failure to provide appropriate language assistance services or auxiliary aids, the legal standards applicable to such claims, the potential remedies, and the potential enforcement mechanisms. They will also cover concrete steps that health systems should take to operationalize compliance, minimize risk, and effectuate communication equity for all patients and/or research participants.
The in-person program will be held from February 2-4, 2022, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and will feature 25 sessions focusing on the legal, regulatory, transactional, and compliance challenges faced by physicians, hospitals, and health systems.
