AGG Partner Sidney S. Welch is mentioned in an article titled “Georgia takes lead in long-distance medical care,” which appeared on Georgia Health News September 7, 2011. The article describes how a small town in southern Georgia has recently implemented telemedicine as part of a $200 million initiative in the Affordable Care Act to promote school-based medical care in underserved areas. Early next year, all the public schools in Berrien County, Georgia, should be equipped with specialized computers capable of transmitting high-resolution images of everything from blocked ear canals to the earliest signs of skin cancer. Telemedicine is now delivered at nearly 250 places in the state. Ms. Welch says that new federal rules make it easier to credential and grant privileges to doctors who are telemedicine providers and are miles away from patients.
