Nanotechnology

Imagine textiles that you can neither stain nor wrinkle, but maintain the look and feel of fabrics made from natural fibers. Imagine materials that are 100 times stronger than steel, but weigh only one sixth as much. Imagine batteries that take up less than one cubic millimeter, but that can supply a medical implant with power for years. Imagine sensors, smaller than a pin point, that can detect anything in extremely low concentrations, from specific antibodies to toxic chemicals. You are imagining things that already exist as a result of the emerging field of nanotechnology.

The revolutionary possibilities of nanotechnology result from design at the molecular scale. Nanotechnology encompasses life sciences, chemistry, physics, and engineering. Through nanotechnology, nano-developers manipulate single atoms and molecules to create new structures to achieve previously unheard of results.

Nanotechnology is driving a new industrial revolution: one that will change our lives. Investment in nanotechnology has begun to accelerate, governments throughout the world are competing to lead this field. US Government investment in nanotechnology has gone from virtually nothing only a few years ago to well over $600,000,000 per year by 2003. And this figure will be dwarfed by proposed government spending in this field over the next five years.

Industry is also noticing this emerging field: large corporations are creating nanotechnology groups, investment firms are creating nanotechnology funds and new venture capital firms are forming around nanotechnology.

This rapid development is creating a host of legal issues that requires legal expertise and experience in numerous fields.

These include:
  • Strategic alliances
  • Mergers and acquisition
  • Intellectual property
  • Licensing
  • Taxes
  • Government funding
  • Environmental
  • Employment
  • Bankruptcy
  • International trade regulation

Arnall Golden Gregory LLP has put together a multidisciplinary team of experts in their respective legal fields to anticipate the legal needs that will be faced by all participants in nanotechnology. We offer counseling in all aspects of nano-business, from large-scale capital investments by established corporations to the emergence of new nano-business companies. We can assist a nano-business in securing patent protection for nano-inventions and we can assist that same nano-business in navigating government regulations that affect everything from funding to environmental protection and employment. By synthesizing the expertise of our diverse professionals into a nanotechnology group, we have helped to lay the foundation for this emerging industry.
